Event Information

The role of social services staff and social workers in the long term care is complex and multi-faceted, yet a key component is always to enable each individual resident to function at their highest possible level of social and emotional wellness. Social services staff help the residents as they transition into or out of the care environment, often being met with difficult challenges in behavior, difficult conversations and the wearing of many hats.

This conference will focus on ways that social services staff and social workers can build a toolbox of resources to assist them in meeting the ever-changing and complex needs of residents. Focusing on in-depth knowledge, attendees will leave with low investment, high return strategies to implement and enhance their effectiveness! Please join the Oregon Health Care Association to advance your career, learn new tools and techniques, and become a leader in your community TODAY.

Program Sessions

Grief Support for Families, Staff and Residents During a Pandemic

Most of us are experiencing some amount of grief and loss as we adjust to how the coronavirus is changing the way we live and also the way we die as our end-of-life rituals designed for community and connection are disrupted. Learn about the grief process under these new circumstances and how to offer support to residents, families, and care teams.

Care Conferencing in a Virtual World
The expectation that all residents must receive care and services to maintain their highest function and wellbeing encompasses a lot of different areas. In this session, the presenter will discuss how to meet the care conferencing and care planning requirements in a virtual world. The presenter will address questions that come up related to involving the family and residents in care planning virtually and ensuring documentation to and from families are completed efficiently. Attendees will hear about best practices for addressing behavioral interventions and service planning including mental health considerations, personalized care plans, and dealing with drug/alcohol usage and will brainstorm challenging situations and work together to come up with solutions they can apply to situations in their own workplaces.

Working Through Family Dynamics, Support and Conflict

While often well-intended, sometimes challenging situations can arise when dealing with resident families. The presenter will address solutions for dealing with conflict from families, including conflict that can arise between family member themselves, and how to deal with challenging family dynamics. Specifically, she will address inherited family trauma and how that affects working with families, how to handle angry family members, and effective ways to manage different personalities.
